The impressive film ‘Free Me’ was made by the American animal welfare organisation PETA. The eponymously titled track was made especially for it by the band Goldfinger. PETA allowed the Party for the Animals to use the film as a commercial on Dutch national television in 2007. The images sometimes led to strong protests from viewers who found the images of animal suffering too confrontational. Other viewers were deeply moved or disconcerted by it, and immediately wanted to join the Party for the Animals after seeing the film. The contradictory responses to ‘Free Me’ are illustrative of the dilemmas with which animal protectionists are often confronted. You want to show the public how animals are treated, but if the images are too shocking, people are unable to handle this emotionally and sometimes even get angry.
